My sister rented out the top half of the Dresser Palmer House for the weekend of her wedding. We had already gotten comfy in the luxury Savannah rental-- but she and her fiancé were gracious enough to have us at the DPH, so we went.

It was beautiful, super clean and cozy. The staff was beyond nice. If a bed and breakfast is what you are after, the Dresser Palmer is for you.

One caveat, I would ask which rooms had claw foot tubs and steer clear of them. Not fun for showering.

The breakfast was always wonderful, and they have a nice cheese and wine happy hour as well.

When I travel, I like having the comforts of home. A washer and dryer is the ultimate luxury for me, strange-- but so true.

I also like having a kitchen, living room, patio, and space to sprawl out in. I usually always choose vacation rentals over hotels.

Last but definitely not least, Mabel Frances Cupcake Emporium. The name alone denotes some scientific form of deliciousness.

I went here three-- yes, one, two, three times during my visit to Savannah, each time bringing more people with me.

I would venture to say that the cupcakes are marvelous. The famous buttercream was so darn good. I was also lucky enough to dig my chompers in the red velvet and salted Carmel! Love!

If you like sweets-- you need a Mabel cupcake!

This may have been my favorite place in Savannah for dining. I didn't actually order since we had Mrs. Wilkes for lunch-- but I sampled everything.

The ambiance is casual and festive, which I like. No fancy schmancy here, just good food.

The gumbo was delicious and huge. The appetizer of barbecue shrimp was saucy and came with a side of cheese bread for dipping. Scallops and grits, yum. Even the corn bread was tasty.

If you are in Savannah, Huey's is a must.

I only wish I had gone hungry!

Let me start by saying during our stay in Savannah, we happened to be situated RIGHT next door to Mrs. Wilkes. I had read that it was a local favorite for down home southern cuisine, but even still I didn't know if I was game for that type grubbing. Day after day our little apartment was filled with the tantalizing aromas coming from Wilkes next door. The fried goodness began to wear on us.

Day three-- we went!

I sent my husband to go wait in line while I waited upstairs for a text--- I mean that's part of the perks of marriage right?

After about an hour, the text came.

I ran down-- we waited about 20 more minutes, then we were ushered in.

The room was filled with people seated family style, food, and anticipation. Tables were packed, I mean jam packed, with food.

We passed around the food and dug in.

Bliss! Carb laden, hearty thick rich, coma inducing food! Ahhhh!

My favorite things were the fried chicken, stuffing, carrot salad and the best-- the meatloaf. Desserts were blackberry cobbler and home made banana pudding. Both were good, as I had a taste of each, but the pudding was my preference of the two.

Go early, go hungry, plan to nap later!

Put a fork in me, I'm done!

Basically I'm addicted to sushi. I require it at least once a week. This obsession had to be satisfied even while on vacation in Savannah Georgia.

I found a place called Wasabi. Since Wasabi is a restaurant near to my heart where I live, I figured I'd give this Wasabi a try. While it's not as fab as the Wasabi I love, it did the trick.

The prices where reasonable, there was a large sushi, sashimi selection, and they even had pho!

We ordered four rolls and a shumai. All were good. I would give a thumbs up for anyone needing a sushi fix in Savannah.

So we land in Savannah, it's getting later, it's raining, E's hungry-- so I tell him to find something. Mind you we have been traveling all day, I'm in jeans and sans makeup-- my hair looks like a semi tornado- but I agree to go somewhere as long as I don't have to figure out where.

That's when my lovely husband finds shrimp and grits on a menu. He shows it to me on his iPhone, I peripherally glance and lackadaisically nod- fine. He calls and gets a table for an hour later. This should have clued me in on something-- it's Monday and there's an hour wait...

As soon as we walk in I know I'm dressed wrong-- not just wrong- begger like...

I take up a chair in the waiting area, ooching and scooching to wrap my jacket around my "I walk the line" DWI t-shirt. Hell, I thought this was low country- doesn't that mean shrimp boils and crawfish? After a few minutes of shock, I remember who I am-- the one who doesn't give a shit, and I just own it. I don't like being caught of guard-- but hey, there's food to be had.

The food

Wonderful! A sophisticated southern menu by all means of the imagination. Offerings such as charcuterie and cheese platters, shrimp and grits, lamb racks and much more. I of course had to have the daily cheese tasting-- so wonderfully delicious paired with walnuts, grapes, strawberry compote, and a fresh chunk of honeycomb. At this point I was likely to forget my manners and match my attire, but my good rearing kicked in. E had the shrimp and grits-- stone ground and delicious. I ordered a salad for my main course, which in fact was overkill after the cheeses. I ate what I could--it was also superlative. It had small square grits cakes instead of croutons for goodness sakes, along with candied pistachios, cranberries, baby spinach and goat cheese. What the hell-- I'm not trying to look good in my bridesmaids dress anymore, forget it. I had to put the kibosh on any idea of dessert so I can't report on flavor, but I can tell you a peanut butter creme brûlée with macadamia caught my eye. What! I still had to look!

As for the service, it was impeccable in spite of my attire. I give a good grade for that. We had a waitress and a waiter in training, he was so eager to please and make suggestions that it made the whole experience way more enjoyable.

The cons: the bartender was, um, I don't know-- but I didn't like her. She dissuaded me from ordering food at the bar-- maybe my shirt?

We had to wait an extra 30 plus minutes after our hour reservation.

These things are worthy of minor demerits.

Really, if you are in Savannah go here for a nice upscale meal. The menu is well thought out, the staff is accommodating, and you will enjoy it!

Chicago Style Pizza Recipe

My husband was so in love with Chicago Pizza. After a recent trip to Chi-Town, I was telling my mother in law about the pizza-- and she said -- lets make it. So we did. She basically did most of it, my contribution was the tomato sauce. The crust turned out fabulous. Here is the recipe we used.

For the Tomatos we used a 28 ounce can of whole tomatoes and hand crushed them. Next I added basil, oregano, pepper, salt and a tablespoon of sugar.

The dough has to be made a day in advance.

Line the dough in an oiled pizza pan (you can get this from a restaurant supply or online). Put down a healthy layer of sliced mozzarella cheese. Add whatever toppings you desire. The usual Chicago style is with a full layer of sausage pressed into the bottom. Use sweet or mild sausage in the and cut it out of the casing and make a single layer above the cheese. Next add the tomato sauce and sprinkle with fresh Parmesan cheese.

Bake on 350 for 30-40 minutes until crust is golden.

E ordered this pizza late one night during a hunger spell. I of course had to taste it, and it was damn good-- and this was delivery. The delivery gave it time to set up a bit, which is the best way to eat this style of pizza. I didn't order this one so I don't know exactly which one it was, but if I had to guess it would be a meat combo. They also ship their goods-- I can tell you I will be ordering online.

Pizzeria Due is the sister to Uno down the road. When you are in Chicago you are definitely going to eat pizza, right... We were hungry and within eye shot of a DUE, so we went. These pizza's are big-- I mean big fat-- 45 minutes to cook big. They are stuffed, shoved, loaded with toppings-- literally oozing with cheese. They come to the table piping hot and cloy with you as try to eat them with out burning your mouth. If you have a bit of restraint-- which you don't -- you should let it cool a bit for optimum congealing. The pesto pizza was alright-- the numero uno is the way to go. Its loaded with everything your cardiologist will love you for.

SushiSamba is part of a chain of restaurants from Miami to New York. The decor is very reminiscent of Vegas, and in fact they do have on in the Palazzo. We went after the lunch crowd had thinned out, and I could tell it is definitely a hot spot for dinner. The menu is thoughtfully appointed with a Latin/Asian fusion. The food was stellar. My lunch sea bass bento box included a tuna roll, rice, salad, miso soup, perfectly mouthwatering skewers of sea bass. E had the hanger steak sandwich and mmmm was his reaction. The fries that came with it were the crispiest tasty version of steak fries I have had. The Kobe Gyoza were small purses of beef wrapped in a wonton then fried. If you find yourself in the vicinity of a SushiSamba you should go.

Portillo's is a Chicago institution. We ended up being right next to one on our stay. We ate their twice, once for their classic style hot dog and once for their Italian beef sandwich. The hot dogs were ok in my opinion-- I actually like the Home Depot variety better. Then there's the Italian beef--mmm -- lovely, delicious, practically perfect. We ordered ours with the hot and sweet peppers. I really didn't order one, but I sure wished I would have-- I know E wished I would have because I kept having bites. It was so good! I LOVE Chicago.

So you want to go to Chicago-- and you are looking for somewhere to stay. Hotel rates are on the higher end of the spectrum-- especially for the lux minded traveler. The week I went most every hotel was booked-- which turned out to benefit me in the end. I do like staying at nice hotels-- but I have become sort of a creature seeking the comforts of home on my vacations. This is how vacation rentals have become my staple. I was in Dallas-- I was hungry and I was lost. My original plan was just to stop in at La Madeline, even though I am not a chain fan. The one that I was near looked like a ghost town-- so I kept moving. Next up was Javier's-- looked closed too-- kept driving. That's when I saw her-- ohhh I saw her, she walked in through the out door. Ok, I am sidetracking-- but that is really when I saw Toulouse. The place was bustling from the inside out -- U turn, were there. Toulouse definitely tipped toward the trendy side, so I was a tinge worried about the food. The plates steadily streaming from the kitchen did look good, maybe this place is ok. No, really it was better than ok. The waitstaff was more courteous than in really any dining establishment I have been to. I mean they were just plain nice and took punctual, polished and somewhat lavish care of us. Service with a smile was not the only high point of this hip french cafe-- there was food. The food was wonderful. It was simple, fresh, and scrumptious. Velvety lobster bisque, drizzled with goat cheese then topped with fresh herbs, crusty buttered bread, crab Florentine with layers of decadence, and a rustic salmon Caesar to order again. Will I come back here, Yes-- over and over.

On our trip to Rome we stayed at Crossing Condotti and loved it. It was centrally located, with tons of eateries right down any given street nearby. If you are in Rome for site seeing, like we were, this is the perfect place. It is not a typical hotel in that it has no restaurant, or spa but who needs that when everything is so close. I really don't think we could have picked anywhere that was better for our time in Rome. All the staff was super nice. One caveat-- there are no irons allowed in rooms in Italy-- I hung my clothes in the bathroom while showering and it seemed to take most of the wrinkles out :)

They do have Wifi and a little fridge with beverages.

We stayed at Lam Minerva on our trip to Capri Italy. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. In particular we especially liked Kamal. He was always ready to help us - with a smile. The rooms were beautifully done warm not overly fussy way. The whole hotel was laid back and extremely comfortable. I loved the modern pool with a view of the ocean. I would recommend La Minerva to anyone planning a trip to Capri. Don't forget to eat the Gelato from all the Gelatorias :)

Should you eat at Longboard's in Santa Barbara? Yes! Are you going to get gourmet food, probably not. What you will get is food that is actually quite good, and a great fun lively atmosphere. I can say their sweet potato fries are the best I have had. The fish from the fish and chips was a Mahi, and was tasty as well. I ordered a wedge salad, and it was just that-- a wedge salad.

Be sure you grab a all the nuts you can from the bar, and drop a few to the mass of pigeons that will squawk at your feet.

Try a Mojito-- they are good there.

Sweet Potato fries, this should have been the first thing.

Get a bottle of their hot sauce to go-- a tip from my sister

The Upham in Santa Barbara sits in a quiet neighborhood on De la Vina street. It was listed on a few sites as a hotel, but I would consider it more of a bed and breakfast. This in fact is a good thing. The breakfast that came every day was bountiful. First a plate of pastries and juice arrives, followed by the breakfast you ordered the night before. Usual selections were homemade oatmeal with raisins, crust less quiche and crepes. Should the raspberry crepes present themselves during your stay, it would be a wise wise choice to get them.

If a quiet auberge away from the hustle and bustle is your style, then the Upham is your place. It consists of a main house and a country cottage just a few steps away. We stayed in the penthouse suite, on the third floor of the country place, which had a large luxurious bathroom and cozy living area. The best part of the room was a balcony with spectacular views of the area.

The Upham is not located on the beach, but it is within walking distance of State Street and the trolley that runs back and forth to the beach. We were able to walk our way anywhere we needed. The best thing about this place was the pricing. You are able to get a lot for your money here. Santa Barbara is pricey and regular single rooms at decent hotels can cost $350 and up. We were able to book the Penthouse, usually $475 a night for $356 due to last minute booking. They also have a special where you can call the day you are going and book a room for $185 and they will bump you up to the nicest room available at that time. Call and talk to Elizabeth and see what she can do for you.

I found THE taco stand in Santa Barbara. Are you surprised? When I went online to look up the reviews for La Super Rica Taqueria, I read that it had been a favorite of Julia Childs. Good enough provocation for me I tell you. I am a taco stand snob, if there is such a paradoxical thing. I like good tacos, hole in the wall-y, grandma making, fresh masa tacos. I was not disappointed. There was a pretty long line when we arrived, and it was around 2:00pm. By 3:00 we had our food, and a table. I would not advise going here at lunch time unless you like punishment akin to steak waving in front of a hungry dog. Go around 3ish when the line thins a bit. The tacos were worth the wait, but what pushed this place to greatness was the tamale. The tamale, vegetable filled and topped with cream sauce, was hands down the best tamale I have eaten. It was a heroin tamale. Yes, that's what it was. Full on fantastic. If you are in Santa Barbara and you do not stop here, you either do not care about food, or you have just escaped a mental ward.

If you are in LA, taking in a movie at an Arclight theatre is a fun thing to do. You can order site specific seats online for any of their locations. What makes the Arclight different from a regular theatre? Well, it is nice to pick your seats-- but they also have a bar and restaurant inside. This makes it a perfect one stop spot for a date, movie night with the girls or the family. The seating is spacious, and plush. You will definitely pay more for all the extras, with tickets around $15 each.

We went in a little early and ordered food. Of course my diner chose the burger. I will have to say the few bites I had were pretty darn tasty. If the rest of the food is on par there is no reason not to eat here and get the full experience.

Oh and have the sweet potato fries.

Caioti is a cute little spot of Tujunga in Studio City. On Sundays they have breakfast food on the menu as well as their classic Italian. I ordered the old world style pizza. It comes usually comes on a thin crust with no tomato sauce. I opted to add sauce, and in hind site should have ordered it on the side since the crust was so delicate. E ordered the french toast and it was good as well. This is a family friendly place, so feel free to bring all the kids.

I am and have been a Food Network junkie since the times when Emeril was bamming in a studio apartment sized kitchen on tv. Those where the days I would come home high and pretend my bean burrito was foie gras. First off, I had no clue what foie gras was, but was sure it was fashionable and tasty. Now I do know what it is, and I wouldn't come near it with a ten foot pole. I am also way long over my green phase.

But I digress.

The whole round about point is that I watch food network like a wide eyed loris and typically dream of the strange and inviting concoctions presented. A particularly favorite show of mine, besides Triple D, is The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Like I said before I often daydream of the foods they show, but I never pegged myself as someone who would run to one of the restaurants shown.

Ok, we all know that is a lie, of course I would run to any restaurant that was well in my perimeter.

On one show Adam Gertler was in a nondescript neighborhood bakery. I was half watching when the egg salad sandwich caught my eye. My attention became acute, and at that very moment I knew one day I would be eating one of those sandwiches. So creamy and inviting they looked. Fast forward to a week ago when I was in California. After a short search on the internet, I found the home of the tempting egg salad sandwich. It was in Pasadena, only fifteen minutes from where we were. Did you get that, FIFTEEN minutes. Well, this was a no brainier. We went!

I walked in and could hardly stand it. I ordered, then waited, then looked around, then waited, and finally my plate from heaven came out. The bread was crusty with a schmear of tomato pesto. To the side was the most fabulously delicious egg salad I have ever tasted. It was simple mixture of homemade mayonnaise and soft boiled eggs delicately spiced. I ate the whole thing, which was a feat for me. This is a must anyone traveling the area.

They also serve the softest most decadent macaroons around. The most popular is the chocolate and caramel with fluer de sel. Eat it, Eat it, Eat it!

Fatburger KO round one! What can I say... Look at the picture. This burger joint has got it (big fat burgers) going on. The burger we ate -- and I say we sparingly here- was huge. This fat-boy was tipping out of its buttered bun at every angle. There was oozy cheese, grease, onions, lettuce and some kind of pickle relish. We ate, stomachs swelling with delight. The fries and onion rings were tasty, but merely side companions to the gargantuan cheeseburger. We ended greedily with a Maui Banana milk shake. OM Gosh (this is the only text fitting here)-- pure delight. If you are around a Fatburger, I suggest you eat here. Make sure you're hungry because they ain't lying with the moniker.

We stopped at In and Out Burger on our way to LAX. We had heard its praises sung, and really we just needed to eat another burger before we left LA---- right? The place was Pa double double cked packed! I was worried we would not make our flight, but these burger slingers knew what they were doing. A short wait later our burgers arrived. They were quite beautifully presented for fast food fare. I liked mine alright. It was a cheeseburger, but I did not love it. Don't get me wrong, I would eat it again, but I think Whataburger is much better. In-and-Out Burger is one of those must try things. Now I have tried it, and can move on to the next.

It's is our last day in LA and although the trip has been packed with fun, there is still one big descision to be made. Should we eat In-and-Out Burger or should we have a Fatburger? This predicament presented itself when we saw a Fatburger on the side of the road. All along we had planned on eating In-and-Out burger, but what we had not factored in was the aroma and allure of the shiney happy Fatburger that caught our eye. Hmmm. What to do? We could let gluttoney take it's course and go for both. I don't have the stomach for it, but I know E does. Whatever the choice, I am optomistic for a good outcome.

From the site of the packed parking lot we knew it had to be a local favorite. As we made our way in we couldn't help but notice the decor. It was like a time warped lake lodge from the seventies complete with a token marlin poised on the rafter. You may think this was a bad thing, when in fact we quite relished it. It was reminiscent of a time more simple with groups of families congregating over dinner. The food was oh so good starting with the salad bar. My brother asked me if salad bars scared me, I assured him that they were low on my list of worries. The salads were simple, clean and fresh. Next we ordered the oysters combo which consisted of oysters Rockefeller and oysters Bienville- it was fab. I ordered the soup of the day, seafood bisque and my brother ordered the Cajun platter. My soup was ok. The Cajun platter was a fiesta of alligator, blackened shrimp, fried crawfish and etouffe. The etouffee was to die for. I would drive there right now to go eat it. The only sad part was that we were too stuffed to try the dessert.

So I was kind of peeved when I realized there was one nice hotel in Natchitoches, but that was only after I was already there. I booked the Holiday in Express and Suites on internet before I left for my trip. I was not expecting anything too wonderful and I was partly right. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, it had a clean modern look. The bad part came when we went to our room. It smelled like a dirty gym. We needed two beds and they had no rooms with two beds left. We were offered another room with an extra roll a way bed. We took it in an effort to escape the bo smells. The floor in the next room was wet, and the entire room had a damp feeling to it. My bed was the hardest thing since rock bread. I had a horrible night, barely being able sleep. The price of the hotel was also high in my opinion.

Really? What's not to like! Delicious hot fresh Beignets. I was really surprised too by how fast they brought the little pastries out. The place was packed when we arrived, as I am sure it is all the time. We chose to sit in the inside section. Once we sat down a server was there instantly to take our order. We ordered a plate of Beignets and before we could bat an eyelash they were coming to the table. This place is a machine of servers and plates full of confections. Like I said, the beignets were fresh and delish. You can't miss this place if you are in New Orleans.

Oh and the best part, our tab was $4. They only take cash.

On our recent visit to New Orleans we visited Muriel's for dinner. Our concierge told us the food authentic Louisiana fare. We were not disappointed. Everything we had was tasty, and the service was great. The goat cheese crepe appetizer was delicious, and my gumbo was wonderful. My brother had the jambalaya, it appeared to be a different take on the dish, but was excellent none the less. We finished off the meal with a creme brulee. I would definitely recommend Muriel's to anyone headed to New Orleans.

I chose the Royal Sonesta in New Orleans on advice from friends and reviews on trip advisor. It was my impression that this was at least a four star hotel. The positive about this hotel was the location. It is situated on Bourbon street which provided easy access to a bevy of restaurants and attractions. The rooms were very dated, with the exception of the bathrooms which looked to be redone. I called ahead and specifically asked for no goose down due to allergies. There was down on my bed. The more irritating problem was that there was only one person in housekeeping for the entire hotel that night. Needless to say it took forever to get a regular blanket. When I checked out I told the lady at the front desk-- who by the way was laughing and dancing with her friend behind the desk- and she literally didn't give half a you know what. The other problem I had with the hotel is that the overnight parking was over thirty dollars. Honestly I think there has to be much better hotels, with better service, in the same area. I have never stayed at a Royal Sonesta before, and this stay will be my last time.

It is so nice to see such a beautiful, bright, modern little spot hit downtown. Contemporary artworks, rotated on a monthly basis, by local artists can be seen hanging on the walls. The Lounge started out as a place that just served coffee and desserts. Darn good ones mind you. I went in soon after it opened and had a red velvet cupcake that was scrumptious. Forward to now. The coffee shop has expanded it's menu to feed hungry lunch goers. I was made aware of the fact that chef David organically grows a lot of the vegetables that are used in the lunch fair. No wonder my salad was so good. It was a simple green salad with tomatoes, dried cranberries and fresh mozzarella. The dressing was a wonderfully light citrus Italian vinaigrette. The other chomper in the group ordered a chicken salad wrap. It was also fresh and tasty. My biggest dilemma was picking out dessert. This was not a bad quandary to be in quite frankly. With prompting from the lady behind the glass I settled on the chocolate mousse with whip cream and strawberries. If its is mousse it has to be more healthy right... Well really I don't care, I just want more!

Lots of people are talking about Wasabi. One reason would be that the past state of Asian food in Tyler left a lot to be desired. Wasabi is fresh, new, and inviting. I asked everyone I knew that had been there if it was good-- what did it look like inside. The unanimous response was that it was good, and that it looked a bit like Fiore its predecessor. Well, they were right, it is good. The inside does not remind me of the old Fiore though. The bones of the place are the same, but dark colors and local art transformed the atmosphere perfectly. I do hope they rotate the art work on a regular basis, all Tyler restaurants should. On to the food. It was positively delicious. It picks up the slack where all others have left off. We started with a Lone Star roll. Not something you would get if you are a sushi purist, but great for those who like creative playful cuisine. I had the chicken salad. The taste was wonderful, and the dressing had a depth of flavor from sweet to tart. The only complaint I had was that the chicken was fried. When I order a salad I don't want fried chicken on it. The other dishes we had were the kung pow chicken, very good, and the green curry shrimp, excellent. The curry shrimp was divine, crave worthy! I will be back to eat it. I am still thinking about it. I will sing the praises of Wasabi to whomever I can.

Oh, and the dessert. A Super palate cooling delish ice creamy cake dream.

When you are looking for Mexican food you that don't want to stop eating, Don Juan El Original is the place. It's like a foodies dream. The Original is off the beaten path and still draws a crowd-- i.e., its good! The chow is consistent, you always know what you are getting. I have tried many things here, chicken fajitas being one of my favorites. Their bean tacos with cheese and avocado are to die for, and the DJ queso with bread should be illegal. All the menu items are reasonably priced, and tacos are $1.45 each. Some other things to try are the quesadilla, beef tacos on corn, sopas- heck its all good. The only thing that leaves a bit to be desired is the dessert. The flan is hit or miss, sometimes it is good, sometimes it's not. Eat here. Nom Nom Nom! I know I will!

We stopped in at Gloria's while we were on Lower Greenville in Dallas. The full patio made our choice easy-- if there are lots of people, the food must be good. The restaurant offers Salvadoran fare, which is similar to Mexican food. Gloria's was modern inside and the service was attentive. A starter of salsa, chips, and black bean dip came out, it was pretty darn good. I had the Sopa Siete Mares and my mom had the Pescado Acajutla. The seafood soup was brothy and flavorful, moms fish was just ok. I would definitely be back to Gloria's, and the next time I would try one of the Salvadorian samplers.

Some friends and I decided to hit up the new Genghis Grill. The grill is known for its do it yourself bowls. Basically there is a meat section, vegetable, spice, and sauce section. You go to each one and fill your container with everything you want, then hand it over to be cooked. Although this sounds really good, it can be a bit overwhelming especially with a line of people behind you. It was my first time in and I think by time two I will have everything down pat. There is definitely an element of fun in picking and choosing how your dinner will be made. If I had more time I might have lingered a while contemplating options. My food was good, what can I say, I was the chef. If your food is bad, its nobodies fault but your own. For those whose culinary sides are a bit week, there are note cards to pick that tell you exactly how to make a specific dish. This place is lively and fun, and we had a great time. The food is priced very reasonably, with dinner costing $9.99 a bowl. On my next trip I will try out lunch.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Both desserts were great. We had a pineapple coconut cake, and a cookie something that our server suggested.

Big Burrito is located off the loop across from Robert E Lee. You can drive through or call ahead and pick up your order when you get there. I had the chicken burrito and E ate the beef burrito. There are a large variety of toppings, or in this case fillings you can get. The burritos were good. The chicken was shredded and the beef had a brisket taste. Two burritos were $13 in total with all of our toppings.

Can I preface this post by saying that I usually really like Dakota's. In the past the food has been great, barring the lobster sandwich. They have delicious pasta, and soups that are warm, comforting and down right wonderful. Their desserts are killer, especially the ooey gooey white chocolate bread pudding. But I must digress as this is the visit I came equipped to write my review. In all fairness today was mothers day and I'm sure that added to the dilemma. Our reservation was set for 5 people at 1:15. I had originally wanted to come in at 12:30 but was told it would be hectic during that time and 1:15 would be better. We arrived on time and were not seated until 2:00 after I had asked the hostess to please seat us at any 4 top she had available. It was mothers day after all and half our set of parents had never been to Dakotas. We ordered our meal, which did not come out until 2:45 and only half was brought to the table. The rest of the food arrived in shifts one plate at a time over the course of the next five minutes. My fish was bordering on jerky, my hunger prevailed and I ate it anyway. Two orders of eggs benny came out looking quite anemic, but the two chicken fried steaks were good. The boys heartily ate and the girls, well they ate too. We were offered a free dessert to make up for the calamity. We politely accepted and ordered an additional dessert for good measure. Both the bread pudding and cheese cake were stellar. I only wish the rest of the meal had been. I will definitely go back to Dakota's, but it will not be on holiday occasion.

Several people asked me if I had tried La Plazita. I kept thinking it was a restaurant in a shopping strip and had been procrastinating eating there. Then one day on the way to the airport I saw this happy little house beckoning me to eat. La Plazita is a cute little restaurant off the side off highway 64. It was clean and inviting from the moment I stepped foot inside. I started off with the auqua de melon or melon water. It was super delish! Chips and salsa arrived without provocation and were finished in the same fashion. Upon perusing the menu I decided on the tacos, one chicken and one beef. Oh happy, happy, joy, joy my stomach sang, my palette rejoiced. I left there one happy rolly polly little camper. Adios La Plazita, I'll be back!

I have been to Villa Montez on quite a few occasions, usually with friends on a weekend night. On a spur of the moment plan, my mother and I decided to dine there for dinner this evening. I called ahead, even though we were leaving in a few minutes, to reserve a table. I was told that there would be no more reservations for the evening, but I could come in and wait for a table. I threw caution to the wind and mozied, being from Texas and all, on down to historic manse. We got there around 5:45 and the place was sparse with people. I put my name on the list and the hostess informed me there would be a 35- 45 minute wait. Hmmm... I could go in a lot of different directions here, but I think if a restaurant is empty people should not have to wait to get a table. We ended up leaving around 8:30 and there were still plenty of tables left. Maybe it is time for a policy change on that.

The Food
We had chips, salsa, and Queso Fondido while we waited in the bar for our table. By the time we were seated I was nearing the full level so I ordered the ceviche. Being a ceviche lover I was a bit disappointed as it was a tad on the fishy side. Mom ordered the seafood enchiladas and they were pretty good, especially the sauce. The husband rolled in late and ordered one of the largest burritos I have ever seen. It was heavy on the rice and beans and left a bit to be desired on the pollo. You can't properly have dinner without topping it off with a dessert, so we did. The Tres Leches was the most appealing sounding for the finale. Boy was it good. Ok, not good, Great. It was the best darn thing I had there. It was soft and moist, leche-y with the perfect amount of sweetness.

With a beautiful patio and warm inviting decor the ambiance is always great at the VM.

On a side note we had a great server. Catherine, whether with a C or a K, a Y or an I, did a great job and was most accommodating.

I am a die hard Don Juan-er. I love their food. When I say love, I could expound with prose lavishing my affection for the queso alone-- but that is another section right...

Mariscos DJS is a new Don Juan restaurant centered around seafood. I ran to this place when I heard it was opening. Thoughts of all things wonderful swirled through my head. I strategized what I would order days before without even seeing a menu. If you know me I bet you could guess what I got. We sat down for our meal and were shocked --- No chips. What-- did I hear you right--- no chips? We browsed the menu, still bruised with chip withdrawal, and contemplated more. Wings were the starter, delish, juicy, flavorful. I ordered the fish soup. It was brothy and tasty. One caveat-- the fish has skin on it, I would prefer without. Erick had the seafood fajitas. He was happy albeit nervous about the small portion. As he eyed it he asked, "should I order more wings." Mom was less than pleased with her meal. We sent it back. It was a shrimp ceviche tostada. The shrimp was not cooked. Now I know what ceviche is, I order it all the time and this was way underdone. They graciously took it away and she ordered shrimp tacos which were indeed cooked.

Some things that need work:

The chairs were hard but the vibe was festive. After a few margaritas I'm sure there would be no issue.

I have never really been a fan of Louis Vuitton purses. Sure I fell victim to a fancy fake once when Murakami was all the rage, but in my defense the zebra print and neon lettering was hard to resist. I think of myself and that silly purse and wonder what was I thinking. Like a bad boyfriend the purse left me feeling like a cheap floozy. If I really want to get philosophical what does a bag say about a person. Oh I have a LV and you can see it-- cant you see it-- it has lettering all over it-- oh did you miss it... Ok, so if a real LV says that,what does a fake LV say? Here can you see me-- I have a FAKE LV-- it has FAKE lettering all over it-- OH did you miss it...

So I have wandered, back to the issue at hand.

This book was recommended to to me by a friend. I was really looking for a beach read but when I flipped through it at the book store I knew I had to get it. What struck me from the first sentence was the perspective it was written in. The more I read the more interesting it became, with each chapter voiced by different narrators. Obviously set in Mississippi during the 6O's The Help is a moving tale of stories that are seldom told. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone open to seeing things from another point of view.

Tyler Texas Rose Garden

Tyler has long been hailed as the Rose Capital of the world. The Tyler Rose Garden is a quiet spot in the middle of town where rows of flowers bloom endlessly. Roses of different names put off intoxicating aromas lifted softly by the breeze. Though I pass by the garden several times a year it has been years since I stopped in. With weather in the 80's, Sunday proved to be the perfect time for an impromptu visit. All the roses in the garden were in full bloom, smiling and swaying in the sun. There were other flowers too, lots of them, beautiful in vibrant colors. Trails meandered through the acreage directing to different points of interest. A quaint gazebo shyly sat at the edge of the property peeking over a simple view of a nearby bridge and pond. In the end my favorite roses were the purple fuchsia ones, although I don't remember their name. All in all it was a day spent well, and I did stop and smell the roses.

Hangover

So today I have a hangover. Even as I write this I want to puke. My head is pounding and I feel like there is a brick settled somewhere inside my stomach. Weird vibes are moving up and down my spine and a fog is thick within my brain. Why do we pay this price for imbibing... Last nights poison was beer. Nice, light, cold beer that looked oh so innocent and inviting. After the first one I felt great. After the second even better. By the third I was down right blissful. Somewhere after that in the mix of things, between the Lady Gaga on the juke box and the friendly reverie things went awry. My pal for the night turned against me. It was an instant where I was aware and then all of a sudden I turned the corner. Things became hazy, tacos sounded inviting, and all inhibitions were lost. I could sing, loudly, much to the dismay of anyone around. Ugly hyena laughing was all part of the game, although still I have no clue what was funny. Maybe my friends will remember... Luckily there was a team member that knew when enough was enough. A generous thanks to my husband for reeling me in after my incoherent nodding that I wanted to go home. The taxi was hailed, the tacos were bought, away we went . And today--- I must pay~

This is the first Indian Restaurant that has done a fairly decent job in Tyler. There buffet has a good selection and the food it enjoyable. Islas Mujeres Mexico

I have been to Isla Mujeres before, but it was a day trip and I really didn't get to see much of the island. We decided instead of heading to Playa, this time we would stay in Isla proper. The island is only about 5 miles long by 1/2 a mile wide. The downtown area is quite populous as opposed the southern tip where we are located. I recommend this arrangement as you get to enjoy the serenity and can still go in town when needed.

The first night here tequila was my friend, by the next day we had made enemies.

Monday
Tequila and Ceviche -- not a good combo

We ate at Villa Roladi which is supposed to be one of the best restaurants on the island. It did not disappoint~ We ordered Calamari for an Appetizer, then I had a mixed Ceviche. Other dishes where curry shrimp, sea bass, scallop salad, panna cotta and creme brulee. Did I mention the Margaritas were good~

Tuesday
Tuesday was spent adventuring around the Island. Cass and I hopped on the golf cart, limited at about 10 mph, and headed into town. After a few wrong turns we ended up at the north end of the island. Lunch was at a small fish place with a wonderful view and the beach as the floor. We had seafood stew and it was wonderful!

We then found ourselves some prime beach front real estate and lazed the afternoon away. We also hit up a taco stand on the way home, it was Tuesday after all. There was a Mexican grandma making the tacos in the back so you can imagine how good they were.

Wednesday
This morning we joined in on a yoga class. The class was held in a beautiful dome shaped building made especially for yoga. The class was wonderful and relaxing. To top off our spa day we added in a massage overlooking the ocean. I can only be thankful.

Next we went to the locally owned Garaffon park. I would say skip this. The snorkeling is less than average, and the people there tried to screw us on the peso to dollar rate. The beaches on the north side are much better and I would rather pay for a nice snorkeling trip.

For Dinner we made fresh red snapper on the grill. Yum!

Thursday
We went to cooking class at Lolo Lorenas. We had lots of fun and learned to cook some local fare. The menu included chicken enchiladas, red sauce, green sauce, pico, home made corn tortilla and seafood soup.

Friday
Beach day
Since we had been to the North side before we knew this beach was the best. We rented a palapa and hung out for the day. There was massage on the beach, which we took up, and I highly recommend it. We ate at Cafe del Mar and the ceviche and fish tacos were fab.

For dinner we went to Casa O's which was also wonderful. It is a quaint little place with a wrap around outdoor seating that faces the ocean. The margaritas were so good and quite lethal. I recommend the grand marnier top shelf on the rocks rita.

Saturday
Because of the previous nights festivities Saturday was more of a chill day. We took the golf cart out only to find food. A small local place proved to have good take away tacos. On E's way home from diving he scored 18 fresh lobster tails. Dinner was amazing!

Sunday
More lazy-- and pizza from pizzeria Rolandi~
All in all I ate and drank to much on this vacay. I am ready for lettuce and the track. Isla is a small little island, where the people are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Some thing that were fun to do was cooking class by Lo Lo Lorena. If you are into Massage you should have one on the beach, which is very inexpensive, or have one in the luxury of your own space with Mary Ann.

We rented a house on the South Side of the island called Casa Zamas. The house was beautiful with a breathtaking view and came with breakfast every day. It was not on the beach but by golf cart you could access anywhere you needed in a short time. The house had a cart but I would get one in town where it is less expensive right when you arrive.

Although most of the reviews I have read state that this book gives a glimpse into another world, I find the essence to be that of pure captivation in human emotion. A new burger joint opened in Tyler, Texas called Burger House. Just having burger in the title seamed like a good enough reason to pay the place a visit. We had a double meat double cheese burger and a side of chili cheese fries. The food itself was ok. I would not rave about it. People go to the fair for many reasons, when you are young you go to ride rides, when you are in high school you go get the heck out of the house, when you are any older than that you go to eat. Ok so there may be an occasional someone that is interested in the prize winning heifer, but I can assure you that person is not me. I go to the fair year after year to make myself ill on gastronomically atrocious foods. Food so hideous that you don't know weather to cringe or forsake all things a sane and dive in. I like to live on the edge a bit, but I draw the line -- a THICK line-- at fried butter. One food visit is quite enough for me so I like to fit in what I can. Luckily I have a hungry other half that affords me the option to try bites freely without having to commit to any one food item. This in itself is also a bad thing, I should have a heart and not let him eat all of the foods I only have one bite of-- but hey, he is a willing participant. This particular trip we had a sausage on a bun. My cheese fanaticism shone through proper as I asked the nice lady for nacho cheese on top. Next was the famous Big Dog burger. The burger in itself is reason enough to go to the fair. Go -- Eat the Burger. My lips have yet to come across a more delicious grease laden burger. When I saw the taco stand I new I had to try a taco as well. It was for the cause anyway. So for $2.50 you can get a taco stand taco at the fair. This was by far the cheapest thing I had and it was pretty darn good. Go La Casita! My crazy food trip would not be complete without dessert, and what dessert do you get at the fair... Thats right, the funnel cake. By this point I was loosing steam. I felt like a bad rendition of man vs. food. I had a few bites and I was done. DONE! Carb-ed out and belly distended I waddled my way out of the fair. A last thought of a caramel apple came to me-- but I just couldn't do it. Til next time ETF!

So I was talked into going to a Cowboys game yesterday. I am not a sports lover, unless it is boxing, so the thought did not really excite me. After a few phone calls I did get a bit riled up and decided going would be better than not. Our friends got us seats that were in the founders club section and although this meant nothing to me, I soon found out that it sure wasn't a bad thing. Booze and food came included in our get up so all was good for me. We rented a limo at the last minute and I would like to thank Brosang's in Tyler for working with us and getting us what we wanted all within short notice. If you need a limo call Brosang's in Tyler at (903) 597-3333. Ok back to business. There is definitely an outpouring of energy when you get in the vicinity of the stadium. Fans were everywhere, the smell of food was wafting in and out of the air and people were walking around with beers in hand. The vibe was frenetic. Going in we had to take escalators to get to our section. It reminded me of an airport terminal. Plastic cards in hand we each respectively showed and traded them for a nifty gold armband. We made it to our seats and the fun began. I, being a mover, started squirming around and got up to get a beer. I never went back to my seat the entire night. I must note here that the food was wonderful. The mac and cheese deserved its own table along with an award or trophy. The rest of the food was great, especially the hot dog bar they brought out at the end. Chili, cheese, ketchup, mustard, onions and relish for me please. More drinks and more food later the game came to and end with the best outcome we could have hoped for--Dallas won. All in all a great time was had!

If you need to be in Crockett, this is the place to stay. Smithfield house is a beautifully redone Craftsman style home with three different suite rentals. The rooms were large and each one had its own sitting area. I think you would be hard pressed to find something better in the area.

So far the list is as follows:

Guerros
Vine Street

This place is pretty good. They have a Tres Leches cake which is an absolute plus plus. The atmosphere is clean, nice, and a bit upscale for a taco stand. I had the Tacos and was happy.

Jalpita
Also on Vine

This one is behind Guerros. Guerros has carefully put up a fence to hide the small hole in the wall, Jalpita. Once I had eaten there, the fence seemed like not only a reasonable defense, but a necessary one. The food at Jalpita is crave worthy. If you are into decor, don't even bother. A place like this is only worthy of the true foodie, the foodie that will go to any lengths to get a good meal. I recommend the chicken quesadilla and chicken tacos on corn.

Jr.'s Taco's
Loop 323 (Near East Texas Brick)

You can only get beef at this taco stand. The menu items include Tortas, Tacos and Qusadillas. This is by far the best beef tacos I have had in town.

El Lugar
Troup Hwy

This place is yummy. Who does not love El Lugar. In Tyler right now this would be considered the chain of Taco stands. El Lugar's have sprouted up all over even in, dare I say, south Tyler...
My favorite thing here is their Quesadilla with all veg, no meat, or a taco made the same way.

El Pollo Regio
Valentine Street

El Pollo Regio is somewhat of a Texas chain. They are known for their spicy whole chicken served with tortilla's, beans and sauce. Their chicken is off the hook. One whole one is enough for 2 hungry people or 3 regular. If you are squeamish about chicken on the bone, a) you are not a true foodie, and b) don't bother coming here.

Morelas Taco
Vine Street (going toward Gentry)

Looks like a family run Taco stand. It really is more on the periphery of being a taco stand with a sort of full restaurant influence. None the less they have a hand written menu on the wall so it still qualifies as a taco stand for me. Tacos were mediocre. I tried a new thing though, Tacos Al Pastore-- Tacos made with pineapple. Definitely worth a try. I give it another go and try different hand written menu items. Red and Green sauce on the ok variety.

MLA Taco House
Crockett Texas Across from the Courthouse

This Yummy place is a kitchy convenience type store with a taco shop in the back. The orange sauce it fab and spicy to boot. I had quesadillas and Erick had barbacoa. Both were good.

Tony's Taco
On Vine street headed to the loop.

This place was not my favorite. I give it a C because the food was edible.

Chilada
On Hwy 271

This must have been an old truck stop or convenience store. The things I were highly impressed with were the clean bathrooms and kitchen. The cleanest I have seen at a taco stand to date. With that said -- clean does not necessarily good food make. I had three tacos a chicken one, a Tinga -- which is chicken in sauce, and beef. The two chicken tacos were edible and the beef was definitely not. The grade on chicken was a C and the beef was flat out flat line F! The tres leches cake was even bad!

Paisano's
Highway 271

Super Clean cute little place. I had a desebrada (shredded) beef taco and a chicken taco. Vanessa had chorizo, desebrada and Nopales (Cactus). E had the Barbacoa of course. He must have liked it because he had six. I liked my food and they had an orange sauce that was pretty good. I would go back here not only for the tacos that amazingly enough were only one dollar each, but to try other menu items as well.

Los Charles is a buffet but I heard they had good tacos so I made a trip. I had a chicken and beef and they were good. E had the Barbacoa and claims it is the best he has had yet. The flan was not worth the money. I make a better one, but then again my flan is rockin.

So I have decided that this Sunday I want to create a mothwatering gourmet hamburger. I have all kinds of ingredients swirling thrrough my head but I dont know what combo I should try. I was thinking smoked gouda, caramelized red onions, and cole slaw (carmelized onions and cole slaw may be overkill) -- or fresh mozzarella, vine ripen tomatoes, and pesto-- or shredded mozzarella, avocado, white onions and hot sauce from the taco stand- maybe a shwarma burger with chames cheese, grilled onion, and cucumber- > Don't know which one to do... I will have to figure this out pretty soon, Sunday is two days away---->

Friday: Capri

Capri is one of the most beautiful places I have been to. It is a little italian island with huge cliffs and houses built all up the cliff line. I had my tasting of Capri beer, it came in a champagne like bottle and was to be shared by the whole table. Now thats the way to serve beer! There are cobble streets with shops and cafes lined all up and down.

Dinner was at a beautiful sea view restaurant. Between four of us we ate shrimp, beef, pizza, ravioli, and calamari. It was Beuno!

Saturday

Today we went went to Anacapri which is about five minutes from Capri. The taxi drive there was damn scary edging next to the cliff the whole way. When we reached we took a gondola to the top most point of the cliff. It was so much fun, I felt like a kid waving my toes around in the wind. The view was spectacular spanning the whole island. As we reached the top clouds started rolling over the ground. It was something I have never experienced before.

For dinner we went to a "German" restaurant. I am not sure what was German about it besides the beer they served. The food was good though so no complaints.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

There is so many things to write about I don't even know where to begin. As I said before Capri is a beautiful magical little island. The food is great, and it is everywhere. The best trick I learned was that you can really eat great food on the cheap by getting what is ready made at the Gelatoria, and as an added bonus you you don't even have to leave to eat dessert. Typical food range from pizza slices, fresh sandwiches, stuffed peppers, fried eggplant and lots more all for around $2.50 euro. We at at plenty of other restaurants too, but the pricing can escalate

I highly recommend taking a private boat trip around the island. Even though I got sea sick, it was totally worth it.

We went to Pompeii via way of Sorrento. Sorrento is a beautiful coastal town, every bit as picturesque as the rest of Italy. We boarded the local train, and let me tell you, it was cheap and we got what we paid for. There was no air conditioning which made it damn well hotter than outside. By the time we made it to Pompeii a nice large lemon granita was in order. Pompeii was huge, and awe inspiring. To see the people preserved with expressions of horror on their faces was a site that will remain ingrained in my head.

Rome-- Lost track of the days

We stayed at a super Cute Place in Rome called Crossing Condotti. If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is really nice, but don't necessarily need all the amenities of a hotel this is a great place.
